I have always loved working with my hands ever since I was young. I felt it was a way to make something beautiful, or at least something I thought was beautiful. Maybe I loved working with art materials because my father taught art. We were surrounded by endless amounts of clay, crayons, paints, and markers of every color known to man. On Friday nights, my friends would go to the movies or baseball games. I spent the evenings watching art history slideshows my father prepared for his art classes the following week. Looking back, it was great!
As time went on, like everyone, we moved on to work, raising families, etc. I felt like something was missing. I started to feel depressed. Sure, I passed on coloring and paper arts with my children. But I wanted something I could do, enjoy, and really feel good about. Well, that something turned out to be fiber arts!
I remember seeing Ms. Martha at my church preschool knitting granny square blankets for the kids to use for nap time. She seemed so happy. I asked her how hard it would be to start to crochet. She said it was easy and that she would be so happy to show me. Martha was so patient and kind. She showed me how to make a granny square in no time. Then we progressed on to making a simple beanie hat for my son and a beautiful crochet blanket for my daughter. It was a snap. My obsession with crocheting grew, and my depression faded away. Now I have yarn everywhere, just like a crazy cat! An afternoon of fun for me is going to the yarn aisle at my favorite craft store just to see what the latest and greatest yarns are out there.
I have just recently learned how to knit, weave, and spin my own yarn. Learning new things is so satisfying!
Now I am trying to pass that love on to you. Learning to knit, crochet, spin, and weave has so many benefits. It can reduce anxiety, depression, irritability, and restlessness.
Maybe you have always wanted to try some kind of fiber art but were afraid you wouldn't have the patience or time. Please give it a try; you will absolutely fall in love with the fiber arts. I invite you to keep following my blog. We will be posting information on knitting, crochet, spinning, and weaving. Keep checking back.
